How to use a self-centering dowel jig: alignment, depth and dowel sizes
A self-centering dowel jig puts every hole dead center on the edge of a board. Here is how to pick dowel size, set drill depth and line up mating holes that close tight.
By SQUAREFORGE Shop Desk · Updated
Key takeaways
- Pick a dowel diameter about one-third to one-half of the stock thickness.
- Set a drill stop collar so each hole is about 1 mm deeper than half the dowel length.
- Reference the jig from the same face on both boards so the holes line up.
What a self-centering dowel jig does
Two clamping jaws close evenly from both sides, so the drill bushing always sits on the centerline of the board no matter how thick it is. You skip the marking and measuring, and you stop getting holes that wander toward one face.
Choosing a dowel size
| Stock thickness | Dowel diameter | Dowel length | Hole depth per side |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 in. (12 mm) | 1/4 in. (6 mm) | 1 1/4 in. (30 mm) | about 5/8 in. (16 mm) |
| 3/4 in. (19 mm) | 5/16 in. (8 mm) | 1 1/2 in. (40 mm) | about 13/16 in. (21 mm) |
| 1 in. (25 mm) | 3/8 in. (10 mm) | 2 in. (50 mm) | about 1 1/16 in. (26 mm) |
Drilling matching holes
- Mark the jointDry-fit the boards, mark a pencil line across the joint at each dowel location, and mark the show face on both parts.
- Set the depthFit a stop collar to a brad-point bit so the hole runs slightly deeper than half the dowel. The extra space leaves room for glue.
- Clamp and drillLine up the jig's index mark with your pencil line, close the jaws, and drill in short pecks to clear chips.
- Repeat on the mating boardKeep the jig fence against the same show face. If you switch faces, any small offset doubles.
When to use dowels instead of pocket screws
Use dowels when both faces of the joint will be visible, for edge-gluing panels, and for furniture you want to repair later. Use pocket screws when you need speed and the back of the joint stays hidden.
Joinery setup checklist
| Stage | Tasks |
|---|---|
| Before cutting | Confirm stock thickness, test-fit on scrap, check bit or cutter sharpness |
| During assembly | Dry-fit every joint, check squareness, have clamps and glue ready before mixing |
| After glue-up | Recheck diagonals, clean squeeze-out before it skins over |
/ Frequently asked
Does a self-centering jig work on boards of different thickness?+
Yes. The jaws close evenly from both sides, so the bushing finds the center of any board within the jig's capacity. Joining boards of different thickness still needs a fence or spacer so the faces end up flush.
How many dowels should I use per joint?+
As a rule, space them about 4 to 6 in. apart and keep the outer dowels roughly 1 in. from each edge. A 3 in. wide face frame rail usually takes two.
