Corner clamps for square boxes and drawers: types, setup and glue-up tips

Corner and box clamps hold two boards at exactly 90° while glue sets or screws go in. Compare the main types and learn a glue-up sequence that keeps drawers and cabinets square.

Key takeaways

  • Rigid aluminum corner clamps fix the angle; you get square corners as long as your cuts are square.
  • Use four clamps on a box and close each corner a little at a time, never fully tighten one first.
  • Measure both diagonals before the glue grabs. Equal diagonals mean a square box.

A glue-up sequence that stays square

  • Dry-fit firstClamp the whole box with no glue and measure the diagonals. Fix any out-of-square cut now, not later.
  • Glue one joint at a timeOn a drawer, glue and clamp two opposite corners, then add the other two.
  • Snug, then tightenBring every clamp just snug, check the diagonals, then go around and tighten each one a quarter turn.
  • Clean squeeze-outLet glue skin over for about 20 minutes and pare it off with a chisel. Wiping wet glue pushes it into the grain.

/ Frequently asked

How many corner clamps do I need?+

Four lets you close a whole box or drawer at once. Two is enough for frames if you glue opposite corners in two stages.

Can I use corner clamps for mitered frames?+

Yes. Screw-jaw clamps hold 45° miters well. Add a little glue size on end grain first so the joint isn't starved of glue.
