Router lift vs. fixed base in a router table: is a lift worth it?

Compare a router lift with a router mounted directly under a plate. Bit height adjustment, bit changes, cost and which setup suits your shop.

By SQUAREFORGE Shop Desk · Updated

Key takeaways

  • A lift lets you set bit height from above the table in small, repeatable steps.
  • A fixed router on a plate is cheaper and simpler but every height change means reaching underneath.
  • If you change bits or heights often, a lift pays for itself in setup time.

Starting with a plate

Mounting a router to a flat insert plate is the simplest router table. It works well for occasional profiles and edge work. The drawback is height: you reach under the table, loosen the base and nudge the motor, then check and repeat.

What a lift changes

A lift holds the motor in a carriage and moves it with a crank or handle. You set the bit from above, in small steps, and you can come back to the same height for the next batch of parts. For joinery like rails and stiles or tongue and groove, that repeatability is the real gain.

Which should you choose?

  • Occasional edge profiles: a plate is enough.
  • Frequent bit changes or cabinet doors: get a lift.
  • Already have a plate: a lift with its own plate replaces it in one step.
